Saving Juniper in Wales

In Wales, the main threat to juniper is from invasive non-native species and from undergrazing leading to scrub encroachment.

On the Great Orme, work is underway to control invasive cotoneaster and strawberry tree, while in Gower a large programme of cotoneaster control is planned by Plantlife Cymru and the National Trust.

Plantlife Cymru has produced the Wales Juniper Inventory, the first comprehensive list of all known juniper populations in the country, vital for tracking the fortunes of juniper in the future. This list is kept up-to-date following surveys by volunteers and is being used to inform Welsh Government of sites to survey for Phytophthora austrocedrae. We are also working with landowners, such as the National Trust and private farmers, advising on management for juniper.
